The present thesis has been devoted to the study of optical communication systems that employ coherent receivers with digital signal processing (DSP), especially the novel technique of parallel optical sampling. The systems that have been analyzed are multilevel modulations, focusing on DQPSK and 16QAM, with optical time division multiplexing. A numerical model in the Matlab software has been developed in order to determine the main requirements and limitations of the promising parallel optical sampling technique. After validating the model by calibration tests, different simulations have been carried out. In these simulations, the transmitted signals are 4 channels OTDM DQSPK and 4 channels OTDM 16QAM. Over these systems and a parallel optical receiver, requirements such as the optical sampling frequency, imperfections between delays in the optical samplers, ADC bandwidth and sample rate have been assessed. Moreover, the performance of different algorithms for compensating the frequency offset has been compared. Lastly, the effects of employing different tributaries to each OTDM channel have been analyzed.
