Some basic issues in WDM transmission are given in-depth experimental investigations. A point-to-point WDM transmission system and a WDM system with label swapping nodes are implemented. The experimental results show that FSK/IM can be a feasible scheme to upgrade metro-distance WDM transmission networks.
